Anaesthetic Technicians (Operating Department Practitioners) are on the NZ government’s Tier 1 Green List which provides a fast-track pathway to residency for eligible applicants.
If you hold a relevant overseas qualification in anaesthetic technology or equivalent and relevant experience, you can apply for registration as an internationally qualified ODP. For information on the full requirements please see the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand website.

How do Anaesthetic Technician’s get registration?
Practitioners who hold a United Kingdom-issued qualification in anaesthetic technology and:
- have 3680 hours or more (2 years fulltime equivalent) post-qualification relevant specialised anaesthetic technology experience, and
- are registered and in good standing with HCPC
will be eligible for registration but may need to complete a period of supervised practice.
All other overseas qualifications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Applications will take up to 6 weeks to process once all required documentation is received and the registration fee is paid.
